Into Hebrew

Yiddish to Hebrew, and old Hebrew handwriting

For families in Israel, or anyone who prefers to read their grandparents’ words in Hebrew.

Many family letters were written in Hebrew, not Yiddish, or move between the two in the same paragraph. In many families one writer used Hebrew while another wrote in Yiddish. I read both, and I can deliver the result in English or in Hebrew.

Yiddish into Hebrew

I translate Yiddish letters, memoirs and documents into clear, modern Hebrew, keeping the expressions and blessings that give the letter its character.

Handwritten Hebrew letters

Old Hebrew letters bring their own challenges: cursive script, rabbinic abbreviations such as נ״י, שליט״א and השי״ת, and dates written by the weekly Torah portion. A letter dated יום ב׳ בא תש״א means Monday of the week of the portion Bo in the year 5701, which was January 27, 1941. I transcribe the letter word for word, spell out the abbreviations and convert the dates.

You can see a Hebrew family letter from 1941 and its transcription in the samples.
